How Businesses Can Get a CAGE Code: A Step-by-Step Guide

If your business wants to work with the U.S. government, you’ll likely need a CAGE Code. This unique identifier is required for bidding on contracts, receiving awards, and doing business with federal agencies. The process is straightforward, but understanding the steps can save you time and prevent delays.

What is a CAGE Code?

A Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) Code is a five-character alphanumeric identifier issued by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). It is used to track companies that supply goods and services to the federal government.

Businesses need a CAGE Code to:

  • Register in the System for Award Management (SAM.gov).
  • Compete for Department of Defense (DoD) contracts.
  • Ensure accurate identification across government databases.

Who Needs a CAGE Code?

A CAGE Code is mandatory for:

  • U.S. businesses seeking federal contracts or grants.
  • Defense contractors working directly or as subcontractors with the DoD.
  • Non-U.S. businesses (they receive an NCAGE Code instead).

Step 1: Register in SAM.gov

The first step in getting a CAGE Code is registering your business in SAM.gov. This free registration is the gateway to federal contracting. You’ll need to provide:

  • Your legal business name.
  • A valid Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), which replaced the old DUNS number.
  • Banking and taxpayer information for verification.

After completing the SAM registration, the system will automatically request a CAGE Code for you.

Step 2: Verification by the DLA

Once your SAM.gov registration is submitted, the Defense Logistics Agency reviews your application. They verify your business details to ensure accuracy. This process usually takes a few business days, but delays can happen if information is incomplete.

To avoid issues:

  • Double-check your business address matches tax records.
  • Make sure your UEI information is correct.
  • Respond promptly if the DLA requests additional details.

Step 3: Receive Your CAGE Code

If everything checks out, the DLA will issue your CAGE Code. You’ll receive a confirmation through SAM.gov. After that, your business will officially be listed as eligible to work with federal agencies.

How to Update or Renew a CAGE Code

Your CAGE Code is valid as long as your SAM.gov registration is active. Since SAM registration must be renewed annually, your CAGE Code details will be reviewed at that time. If your business address, ownership, or structure changes, update your SAM profile immediately to keep your CAGE Code accurate.

Tips for a Smooth Process

  • Use consistent information across all government forms.
  • Keep copies of your tax records and banking details handy.
  • Plan ahead and register early if you have upcoming contract deadlines.

Final Thoughts

Getting a CAGE Code is an essential step for any business that wants to work with the U.S. government. By registering in SAM.gov, completing the verification process, and keeping your information updated, you’ll position your business for success in federal contracting opportunities.
